WHAT’S ON IN INDIA

Pope’s India visit on November 5 - 8, 1999: (IndiaExpress / 27th October 1999)

During His upcoming visit to India (November 5-8) Pope John Paul - II will pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. The Pope will meet the Indian Prime Minister, President and Vice President; preside over a mass at New Delhi’s Nehru Stadium and take part in a meeting of religious leaders of all faiths at the Vigyan Bhawan. In view of the threats from certain militant Hindu organizations,
including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, to disrupt the visit, foolproof security measures have been made for the visit. Thus, the visit will not only be safe, but also the best in Asia.

While there have been some stray threats regarding forced conversions by Christian missionaries in the tribal areas of the country, the overwhelming response is that of welcome to the Pope, in the highest traditions of the country. During his visit the Pope will address Catholic religious leaders at a special assembly in the Sacred Heart Cathedral. While requests had come in from other Indian cities also for the Pope's visit, he would remain only in Delhi.

JETTISONING DUAL CITIZENSHIP, INDIA OFFERS PIO CARDS TO NRIs: (Courtesy: IndiaNews - 26th Oct 1999)

The concept of “dual citizenship” that India earlier proposed to give to persons of Indian origin across the world has been given up since it is construed as “burdensome” for Indians who are not in the affluent West. Instead India has launched the PIO (persons of Indian origin) Card scheme facilitating hassle-free visits to the country by foreign citizens of Indian origin.

India seeks more tourists from Gulf

TOURIST traffic from Bahrain and other Gulf countries to India is expected to increase by 25 percent this year. India's immense tourism resources came under the spotlight at the seminar, organised by the Dubai-based Government of India Regional Tourist Office (GOIRTO) in co-ordination with Air India, at the Baisan International Hotel. Indian Ambassador Surinder Singh Gill was the chief guest. GOIRTO regional director Gour Kanjilal, who was the keynote speaker, said in 1998, the Middle East/ Gulf countries contributed 90,000 visitors to India, 10,300 of which were Bahraini nationals. This figure does not include the European expatriates or Indians in the Gulf. India's Tourism Ministry, in order to give a major impetus to tourism in the country, has declared the year 1999-2000 as Explore India Millennium Year, said Mr. Kanjilal. This year the trend looks good, and because of intensive marketing campaigns and special millennium packages, the tourist traffic from the Gulf is expected to increase by 25pc. Our participation at the Gulf 99 expo in Bahrain is part of this campaign and to reassure tourists from Bahrain of our full co-operation. Mr. Kanjilal said tourism was the third largest foreign exchange earner in India after gems and jewellery and textiles. Last year, our earnings through tourism was approximately $3,200 million (BD1,206m) and it is about 1.2pc of our GDP, he continued. Total tourist arrivals to India last year were 2.37m, but our less number of tourists is compensated by their longer stay which is on average of about 29 days, one of the highest in the world.

The millennium packages, he said, would be available until September 2001. It will be in collaboration with the country's carriers, Air India and Indian Airlines. They will include meet and assist services on arrival and departure at airports, transfers, accommodation on a twin-sharing basis at the Ashok Group of Hotels, sightseeing and excursion tours and entrance fees to places of interest. The message of the seminar was: Welcome to India and India be your Millennium destination. Air-India manager Freddie Vaz said the presentation was aimed at promoting India as a tourist destination. A calendar of events during the period, April 99 to March 2000, has been drawn up by the Tourism Ministry which shows the fairs and festivals and events which are to be celebrated during the Millennium Year, he said. Special packages have been introduced by the tour operators in co-ordination with the public and private sector agencies like hotels and airlines. They are also targeting non-resident Indians to refamiliarise them with their roots, heritage and culture.

Salgaocar, Churchill for Rovers tourney:

MUMBAI, Oct 18 (PTI): This year’s Rovers Cup Football tournament, scheduled at the Cooperage ground in south Mumbai from November 1-15, will be a scaled down affair due to the financial crunch faced by its organisers. “Due to financial constraints the newly-elected committee members of the Western India Football Association (WIFA) have decided to hold the event as an eight-team affair instead of the usual 16 to cut down on expenses,” WIFA spokesman, Mr. Pervez Ziauddin told PTI. “As of now only four outstation teams and Mohammedan Sporting of Dhaka are in the fray along with three local Super League outfits though we had sent invitations to some other teams from outside Maharashtra,” Mr. Ziauddin said. JCT (Phagwara), FC Kochin, Salgaocar, Churchill Brothers (both Goa) are the Indian teams from outside the state and the three local teams which are in the eight-team draw are Mahindra and Mahindra, Air-India and Bengal Mumbai Football Club, according to the WIFA vice-president.

Indians 'played key role in building UAE'

Sharjah - Indian expatriates have played an important role in the development of the UAE and their hard work is reflected in every aspect of life, said Dr Ghanem Al Hajri, director general of Sharjah Airport Authority. "The historic friendly relationship between the UAE and India speak volumes for the harmony and relations which people of both countries have with each other," he said. Immigration services go online

Dubai - The public may now access the information they need on immigration services and visa requirements on the Internet. Col. Saeed bin Bleilah, Director of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, said yesterday the department had introduced an online inquiry service on its new website.

"The department created a telephone inquiry service and a touch-screen service to facilitate the public's information search," he said. "The website is another way to give the public more facilities while they are in the comfort of their homes or offices." Bin Bleilah explained that the Internet inquiry service would have all the information needed by anyone who wished to know the requirements for any application.

"The Internet inquiry service includes applications for residence and visit visas as well as federal laws for obtaining visas and residence. There is also a newsletter about all the department's new regulations."

In the near future the service will be developed to enable the public to fill in the applications on the website. "The public can also send queries and suggestions through the website which is now available in both Arabic and English," he added. The website, which can be accessed on www.dnrd.gov.ae, will include information about the department and its branches.

LIFE'S WINNING TIPS and RIDDLE

RIDDLE
One morning I was on my way to market and met a man who had 4 wives. Each of the wives had 4 bags, containing 4 dogs and each dog had 4 puppies. Taking all things into consideration, how many were going to the market?

RECIPES OF THE WEEK

CARAMELIZED LEEK AND MUSHROOM SOUP

Leeks are a good source of the lesser known carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. When you buy them, look for brightly colored, firm, fresh-looking leeks, preferably with untrimmed tops. I like to add port wine to this soup as it gives a nice flavor.

10 ounces of large leeks (slice the whites thin)

2 tablespoons butter

˝ teaspoon sugar

2 cups chopped white mushrooms

3 cups chopped portabello mushrooms

1? cups chopped shiitake mushrooms

1 ˝ quarts of water

2 cups canned, crushed tomatoes

1 cup port wine

˝ cup mushroom soy sauce

salt and pepper to taste

To caramelize the leeks, sauté them in the butter and sugar until they are evenly browned all over. Be careful not to burn them. When they are done, set them aside.

Simmer the chopped mushrooms for one hour in the water. Strain them out of the water (keep the water!) and allow to cool. Place the cooled mushrooms in a blender and puree them. Return the puree to the water and add the tomatoes, port, soy sauce, and leeks. Simmer until the soup becomes thick and brown colored.

ITALIAN MERINGUE WITH FRUIT PUREE

This is a great dessert! My grandmother used to make all sorts of odd meringue treats like cookies and bowls for ice cream. But this is one that is quite stunning. It comes out much like a sorbet but is creamier and closer to ice cream. Be sure to set aside some time well before mealtime to make these--not that they take too long, but you'll want to give them plenty of time in the freezer.

Meringue:

2 egg whites

7 tablespoons of sugar

4 tablespoons water

Puree:

? cup orange juice

˝ cup chopped raspberries

˝ cup chopped blue berries

? cup chopped bananas

˝ cup Cool Whip

Mix together 6 tablespoons of sugar and the water and cook at a low heat until the mixture begins to solidify. A good way to check the consistency of the sugar water is to fill a spoon with it and see if it is gelatinous. Look for a film to form on the top of the mixture.

While the sugar is cooking, whip the egg whites into soft peaks. Add the remaining sugar and continue whipping until the egg whites begin to firm.

To this, add the cooked sugar in a slow, steady stream, beating constantly. Make sure that no sugar gets stuck to the bowl or the beaters. Once the sugar is completely added, continue beating until the meringue is stiff and cool.

To make the puree, add all the ingredients into a blender and blend into a thick sauce.

Combine half of the puree with the Cool Whip and the other half with the meringue. (I use Cool Whip because it's quick and easy. This recipe traditionally uses whipped cream. I would encourage you to use whipped cream if you have the time.) Fold the two mixtures together and place in a nonstick muffin tin. Place the tin in the freezer and leave there for at least 4 hours. Remove and serve by turning upside down on a plate and, if you're so inclined, squirt a bit of chocolate syrup over the top.

ADULT ACNE

PIMPLES? AT YOUR AGE? HERE'S SOME HELP.

- Face up to it
- Acne myths
- Pimple info
- Treatment

The face is typically the most exposed part of the body, and the first feature that others notice, which is why flaws on the face can cause so much self-consciousness. Everybody wants smooth, kissable, touchable skin. Why can it be so difficult to attain? While some people dismiss acne as a problem they outgrew with puberty, millions of adult know otherwise: Acne can be as serious in adulthood, and also as embarrassing, as it was at age thirteen.

Facing up to it

Most of us are willing to acknowledge a "pimple" or a "zit" here and there, but owning up to and seeking treatment for acne means admitting that yes, once again, acne has struck. Everything from blackheads to whiteheads to little pimples and cysts is medically defined by the word "acne." Despite the fact that millions of adults are affected by acne, sufferers often feel alone and ashamed of the condition.

Myths vs. facts

Many think their acne is their own fault -- for not washing their face well enough or for wearing too much makeup. Acne sufferers often fear being stigmatized as "dirty." Getting over these misconceptions is the first step to treating acne. The truth is that acne is caused by hormones and heredity. Behavioral factors like diet or how much one sweats have nothing to do with it. Most people inherit the tendency to break out (or not to break out); their condition is triggered by hormonal fluctuations. This is why pubescent teenagers, whose hormones are in constant turmoil, are acne's most obvious victims.

Still, adults (and especially adult women) experience their share of hormonal ups and downs. In fact, women's hormones tend to fluctuate on a daily, weekly and monthly basis! One result of this activity is that 40-50 percent of all adult women experience breakouts on an ongoing or monthly basis.

Why must we suffer these hormonal surges all over again? When women hit their thirties, the ratio of male to female hormones alters. Whereas the androgens (male hormones) and estrogens (female hormones) had been relatively balanced, as women get older, androgens increase while estrogen decreases.

This imbalance can cause acne flare-ups, and (as if that's not bad enough) it can also cause the growth of facial hair. A hormone called cortisol, released when we are under excessive stress, may also trigger acne. While adult acne is not as common in adult men, whose hormones tend to more or less flatline after puberty, male cases do tend to be more serious.

What is a pimple?

How do pimples come to be? Hormonal fluctuations jump-start a process inside the skin that leads to the formation of visible pimples. Inside every pore is a hair follicle and a small hair that is attached to an oily base. Hormonal changes in the body cause cell activity inside the pore that results in clumps of cells getting stuck together, clogging the pore. These clogs prevent the release of the oil from the hair follicle base inside the pore. The bacteria that naturally live inside our skin start feeding off this trapped oil and breaking it into little particles that become inflammatory substances in our skin. Bingo, a zit is born. It is important to understand this process in order to begin combating acne.

Treatment
While there is no cure-all for acne (if there were, there wouldn't be all those pimples out there!), there are some very effective treatments. Whichever course you choose, remember that acne should be treated immediately to prevent the formation of scars. Also, the entire face (or other infected area) should be treated -- spot treatment is ineffective. Most topical medications sold in stores recommend application only to infected area(s). Because the pore-clogging process happens two to three weeks before any blemish becomes visible on the skin, this type of treatment will not be helpful.

Topical medication, such as products containing sulfur or cortisone, as well as antibiotics, will help reduce inflammation. Of these, cortisone is considered the most immediate and the most effective. For killing bacteria, the most important ingredient to look for is benzoyl peroxide. It has much stronger killing power than antibiotics, and, unlike antibiotics, it does not build up resistance in bacteria. One note: with benzoyl peroxide products, stronger is not necessarily better. The only difference between products that contain 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide and those that contain 10 percent is that the higher percentage is so strong that it will often cause burning and further irritation to the skin. Therefore, products with a lower percentage of benzoyl peroxide are recommended.

Several drugs, including oral contraceptives, Accutane, and those containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid, can help reduce oil production. Accutane is highly effective for the long-term treatment of very serious acne. It is the strongest acne medication, and is only recommended for those with serious acne signs of scarring.

But be warned -- Accutane has a lot of side effects, one of the most important of which is that it will cause birth defects if pregnancy occurs while on the drug. Women can safely get pregnant within a few months of going off the drug.

Other complications may include high cholesterol and trigylceride levels, very dry skin, chapped lips, and muscle and joint aches. All of these effects will subside once the medication is stopped. Accutane needs to be taken for five months in order to achieve results, and 20-30 percent of the time a second course of treatment is needed.

Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) can be helpful in improving acne, but these are not sufficient in and of themselves. Although many women experience acne breakouts when they go off the pill, these usually subside after six months or so, once the body has adjusted to the hormone change.

While Retin-A (a derivative of vitamin A) is often used to treat acne, it is now considered by dermatologists to be more effective as a wrinkle treatment. Retin-A will not be effective immediately and, like Accutane, will also cause excessive drying of the skin. This drug is often recommended for older women with mild acne who want to kill two birds with one stone -- minimize the acne and help reduce wrinkle lines. Retin-A should be applied at night, as the sun will render it inactive.

People respond very differently to various acne treatments, and it is highly recommended that acne sufferers seek personalized treatment advice from their dermatologists.

POINTS TO PONDER

Theories on why we yawn and why yawning is contagious...

You might have seen that when one person yawns in a room, consequently there are two or three other  people also yawning. Is yawning contagious ? I have come across three theories on this...

Theory 1: Sometimes there is very little oxygen in our lungs. This may be due to reduction in the rate of breathing which happens when we feel sleepy or simply due to reduction of air pressure around us. Therefore in order to suck in more air in the lungs our body resorts to what we call as yawning. Now if the air pressure around us is reduced, it is possible that other people around us also experience a similar thing. Therefore all of them yawn.

Theory 2: We yawn to equalize the pressure on our eardrums. This pressure change outside your  eardrums unbalances other people's ear pressures, so they must yawn to even it out.

Theory 3: It is psychological. You see somebody yawn and unconsciously you get the urge to do the same. Does anybody have any other theory on this ? If so share it with us...
